Our mindset is a belief that frames the ways in which we handle certain situations, and helps us to determine what is happening and how we react. Mindset is an important aspect of our being, as it can either help or hinder our development.
There are two main types of mindset people may have – a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. An individual with a fixed mindset may view aspects of themselves as being stable and unchangeable, for example their intelligence, abilities and talents. On the other hand, an individual with a growth mindset may view these things as being learnable, and that through effort they can improve them.
Essentially, a fixed mindset may result in us becoming stagnant, while a growth mindset may help us grow as individuals and harness more opportunities in life.
It is important to understand that even if you do have a fixed mindset, you can change this! While it may be challenging in the beginning as you adjust your beliefs, through practice it should become more natural.
If you feel you have a fixed mindset, I suggest first starting by giving yourself the opportunity to learn new things. This should help you begin to recognise that you are in fact capable of improving your capabilities.
Adopting a growth mindset will look different for everyone depending on their interests and goals, but you can start small simply by reading books on topics you are interested in, or even trying a new activity.
When working with my clients I often see an immense change in mindset after they begin doing ice baths. For example, a client of mine was looking to try something different and came along to try breathwork and ice baths with me. Since her first session she has noticed a big shift in her mindset, as she has shown herself that she is capable of learning and trying new things! This small feat has helped her adopt more of a growth mindset.
