I was having a coffee the other day with a fellow health practitioner and she asked me “What is the meaning of health to me?” This is such a broad question and I don’t think can be answered in one simple sentence. Health needs to be looked at in a holistic way in mind body and spirit and isn’t just about not having a disease or illness and is not just about exercising and eating good food, although these are important – health is so much more.
Health is energy, it is vibrancy. It is having positive emotions and knowing how to process those emotions. Health is having the ability to be able to deal with stressful situations without it negatively impacting your body. Health is having healthy gut bacteria and being able to have good quality sleep. It is about being able to practise self love to yourself as well as being able to show kindness and gratitude to others. it is about being able to connect with others and demonstrate healthy communication. It is about moving without pain in all planes of movement. It is about being able to comfortably sit in your own stillness. It is caring for the environment and being conscious of the impact that you have on it. It is about being in touch with nature. I believe that if all of these aspects are looked at and are in balance – then that is the true meaning and essence of optimal health.
