“I fell into acupuncture at a very early age. At 20 I had done a couple of years of an arts degree, then the first year of a Naturopathy diploma. I had been drawn by the idea of using herbs.
This is something I couldn’t even tell you how I knew about! I had grown up in North Qld before the internet and had certainly never met anyone practicing herbs. But something drew me in!
It was there at college I had an acupuncture treatment and was hooked! I loved the idea of working with my hands and off I went without ever looking back.

We delve into what this means for those of you who have not been introduced to these ways. Acupuncture is one of the components of Chinese Medicine, which is the over arching eastern medical system created a few thousand (yep thats right!) years ago to understand how to keep our body mind and spirit healthy.
Acupuncture in it’s modern application is the use of “needles” (we need a different word but we don’t have one in English) on points on the body that create positive change in our nervous system. (put very simply!)
The benefits of acupuncture are wide and varied!! There have been a lot of studies done and as a result statistics to prove the efficacy of acupuncture on pain, in IVF treatments, oncology treatment (in conjunction with modern treatment). It is a whole body medicine though and so while there is much talked about of acupuncture treating this illness or that. In reality acupuncture (and the acupuncturist) treats the whole person in front of them. So whilst a patient might have come in for headache, period pain or insomnia other health benefits will be experienced on the way.
Immunity is a big topic at the moment and Keri shares with us her professional advice “There are so many things you can take to support your immune system and while these are important (Zinc Vit D, immune boosting antioxidants, olive leaf etc!)
Managing stress, prioritising sleep, and moving your body in the outdoors (if possible) are my first priority.
Stress and lack of sleep will deplete you of so many essential nutrients, and from an Eastern perspective moving your body improves the flow of Qi and specifically your ‘defensive Qi’ which is nourished by the lungs. (think of a force field being held up around your body) “
Acupuncture is great as a preventive tool to maintain health and prevent being run down as well as a way of building up someones health if they are in a state of stress or anxiety and need to anchor in some long term self care practices.
