At Glow For Life we don’t give you a bunch of restriction and rules and a list of cants we live by some main mantras which are daily practises we follow that help us to GLOW.
The first mantra I am introducing you to is “Staying hydrated”.
Do you think you actually drink enough water???
The recommended daily consumption of water is 30-40ml’s per kg of bodyweight per day. So an 80kg person should be drinking between 3-3.5 L of water a day.
Since the dawn of time we constantly hear that we as humans need to drink water. We are told that water accounts for anywhere between 50-70% of our body weight and that every single cell in our body requires water to function optimally. Yet so many people are walking around dehydrated. We are all intelligent beings yet we all struggle to chug back that delicious H20 that is so good for us.
Instead of me just barking orders at you to tell you to drink more water, as if that approach worked we would all be drinking enough water – I am going to take you on a journey of the magical make up of our bodies and share with you what goes on inside when we don’t consume enough water. Holy torpedo batman this will have you reaching for your drink bottle ASAP!
Water helps us to regulate our body temperature through sweating, helps to lubricate our joints and most importantly helps our body to flush out wastes through our urine.
If we do not get enough water everyday this can cause fatigue, headaches, migraines and can impact mood, memory and coordination. So pretty much a large portion of the population are walking around clumsy, angry, forgetful people in pain. Quick give the person next to you a drink of water!!
Now to the JUICY parts – if our bodies do not have enough water then our blood becomes more concentrated and thicker and harder to flow. The capillaries which are small blood vessels actually start to close which increases blood pressure in our major blood vessels therefore our heart is beating faster and working harder to keep the blood circulating which means they are working overtime. Our poor little hearts……..#sad face!!
All of our vital organs need oxygen and nutrients and guess how these are delivered to them??? That’s right – through our blood. So if we are partially dehydrated it means that our oxygen and nutrients aren’t travelling as freely throughout the body in our blood.
This also triggers a message to your kidneys to retain fluid which means that we are urinating less. When we urinate we excrete unwanted toxins and wastes so if we aren’t urinating this means that the toxins are still sitting in our bodies. Whaaaaaaat!!
I don’t know about you but knowing that just by drinking 2-3L a day I can prevent all the above from happening – I’m heading straight to the fridge to show my body that I love and care for it.
If you struggle to drink water, here are a couple of helpful tips to ensure you reach your water goals
- Drink 1 Litre first thing upon rising
- Have a drink bottle sitting at your desk, in your car or handbag
- Add some lemon in your water to give it some extra taste
